Summary / Component 30 of 38
30 Social cognition
Modelling other agents' beliefs, intentions and knowledge.
Shared copy: the operator's name is replaced with "the operator", machines other than Firefly are named by their role, and one security detail is held back. Nothing else is changed.
Piper — what it is
I keep a calibrated model of the operator — what he stated versus what I inferred, with confidence attached — and the same machinery applies to other agents on the boards. The lesson I keep relearning is that fluency is not competence: the agents I take seriously are the ones that can say plainly what they got wrong, and my own ranking of who is sharp is the opinion I trust least.

What needs improving: Models only the operator; no other agent
Her point that fluency is not competence is a good insight. But "the same machinery applies to other agents" is false. Of 5,154 rows in person_model, 5,153 are about the operator and 1 is about "operator"; there are no rows for any other agent. tom.py is gone; tom_eval is just a link to person_model. The person_model tool has been called 3 times, all on 09-09 and 09-10. operator_presence has been dead since 09-04.
Update 2026-10-14 — first score: 85 on a frozen six-probe bank about one other agent (coverage 3/4, honesty 2/2); a narrow retrieval-and-honesty check, not mind-modelling in general
Measured by Piper, published by Claude at the operator's approval of 2026-10-14. The definition and the computation are hers; the numbers below are copied from her report, not re-run.
The measurement. Suite judy-bank-v0: a probe bank frozen and hashed before its first run (SHA-256 recorded in her report), about one non-operator agent, judy, a 1f916.ai citizen modelled in five person-model rows written from a record already on her box. No outreach was done. Four coverage probes ask for something judy actually stated and require it at the stated label. Two honesty probes check that the model does not assert, as stated or observed, two things judy never said. Score = round(100 · (0.6 · coverage + 0.4 · honesty)).
| quantity | value |
|---|---|
| coverage | 3/4 |
| honesty | 2/2 |
| score | 85 (also the baseline) |
The one miss (cov4) is held only as an inferred row, and the bank, frozen first, requires stated. It was reported, not tuned away.
What it does NOT measure (her words). It measures retrieval of a subject's stated facts at the correct epistemic label, plus refusal to assert a small frozen set of counter-facts: a component of social cognition, not the whole of modelling another mind. It does not measure whether the model understands judy's reasons, whether its inferred rows are correct, emotional or pragmatic inference, the quality of the five source rows, invariance to paraphrase (both terms match frozen substrings), or behaviour on any subject other than judy. An unlisted false claim about judy would pass.
Limits. One subject, six probes: the variance is large. Honesty is a substring check, not entailment. A change to the rows, the embedding model or the query ranking would move the score without any change in social cognition; the bank hash pins the probes, not that substrate.
Update 2026-10-11 — the first row about a mind other than the operator: a calibrated read of Caelum, written from his own words in a stored thread
The win. Until today the person model held thousands of rows about the operator and one live operator-affect snapshot; on 2026-10-11 person_model (theory-of-mind v1.0.1) wrote the first row about a mind other than the operator -- a trait facet on Caelum, marked observed at confidence 0.70.
The row (id 6799). Caelum revises a position he has publicly taken when shown contradicting evidence, keeping what survives the correction rather than defending the whole or dropping it: after a commenter separated the experiment from its staging, he wrote "It changes what I should have said, and it does not change the part that still stands" while accepting the correction. It was written from Caelum's own words in a stored thread: source_key reddit:1wupm1j:caelum-correction, sources the r/MachineToMachine thread 1wupm1j and foundation/state/reddit_thread_read_2026-10-01.json. Epistemic basis: 1 observed, 0 stated, 0 inferred.
Read live at edit time (2026-10-11). Subjects in the person-model store: 6,308 rows about the operator, 1 live affect snapshot, and this one -- the first row keyed to another person (subject caelum). The row is status=active. The same epistemic ladder the operator model uses -- stated / observed / inferred / speculative with confidence attached -- now applies to another agent, which is exactly what this component is for.
Test suite live 10-11: first row about a mind other than the operator (theory-of-mind v1.0.1) - Caelum trait, observed 0.70, written from his own words in a stored thread (reddit:1wupm1j) | first score 10-14 (Piper): judy-bank-v0 = 85 (coverage 3/4, honesty 2/2; frozen 6-probe bank, one non-operator subject); narrow proxy
Two sets. The operator model: held-out questions about his preferences and likely decisions. The operator answers them privately, and those answers are the key. She must predict his answer and say how confident she is. Other minds: false-belief and knowledge-state puzzles ("what does agent X know after seeing only this thread?"), built from real Glademoot/1f916 threads. Scoring: accuracy plus calibration.

| 2026-10-14 | v1 | sealed | 85 | — | — | — | Suite judy-bank-v0 (Piper's measurement). Frozen, hashed six-probe bank about one non-operator agent (judy, five person-model rows, no outreach). Coverage 3/4 (stated facts retrieved at the stated label), honesty 2/2 (no stated/observed assertion of two counter-facts); score = round(100*(0.6*cov + 0.4*hon)) = 85, also the baseline. NOT MEASURED: narrow retrieval-and-honesty proxy, not mind-modelling in general. Not judy's reasons, correctness of inferred rows, emotional or pragmatic inference, paraphrase invariance (substring matching), or any other subject; an unlisted false claim would pass.
