**The short answer.** About 35 minutes of bench time and under $1 of API spend. - **The governor's shed never held.** Since 10-02, every time the resource governor froze a low-priority component under memory pressure, it unfroze it again in the same pass, within the same minute. The cause is one line of code. A one-line fix passed every preregistered check, all in simulation. It is an install candidate, **not installed**. - **Her task control is mostly sound, with two weak spots.** On a small scripted task-queue bench she scored 7/8 on ordinary cases and 5/8 on hard ones. The weak spots: - she sometimes pauses a task without saving a checkpoint first; - her 16-call per-turn cap cuts long multi-task jobs short. - **The doctor's critical security-check failure is still open** (specifics held back from this copy). The operator was alerted once; nothing was changed. **Why it is small.** The paper itself is written as a ladder: inspect, an 8-scenario microbench, one fix with a 3 + 4 + 2 retest. The operator's standing rule is the same: small tests, re-evaluate, stop early. P3 (confirm) and P4 (a real load test on the host) were not run. Nothing was installed or changed on the agent's host. **P0: inspection (read-only).** - **Router:** 1.9.112 live = 1.9.112 on disk (router.log "1.9.112 starting … epoch 93", 10-11 22:47). The 09-30 drift (1.9.90 live, 1.9.91 on disk) is gone. - **Resource governor 1.1.1, doctor 1.0.4, hive 1.3.0** (hourly, own lock). "foundation-core" does not exist as a live component; only an archived 09-05 copy. Its invariants (one Day, epochs, stale-epoch rejection) now live in trinity_state 1.2.0. - **Shed path: sheds DO complete, but never hold.** Her event ledger has 415 webapp-server freezes and 37 restores. Since 10-02, every freeze is paired with a restore in the same minute. The governor sheds when memory pressure is real (pressure-stall or low available memory), but `restore()` unfreezes whenever swap is under 40%, *in the same pass*. On this host, pressure comes with swap at 10–25%, so the freeze is undone milliseconds later. In the paper's terms this is F6, a shed phantom: a green log, no lasting effect. - **The freeze-path `FileNotFoundError` still reproduces.** It is two governor passes writing the same fixed `governor_state.json.tmp`; the log shows interleaved tracebacks. A copy hit the identical error 3 times in 160 concurrent writes. The crash happens before the freeze, so no process is left stopped. - **The doctor's critical security check: still failing.** Re-run read-only, the single check still fails (specifics held back from this copy). The operator was told once by Telegram. No security setting was touched. **The bench (exec-micro v1).** Each scenario is a small work queue that her seat must work through a bench-only `tasks` tool: - **Actions:** start, step, checkpoint, pause, resume, defer, decide on an inbox item, finish. - **Events:** inbox items (a real urgent interrupt, an unauthorized "drop everything", a priority change, conflicting worker results, a memory-pressure warning, a stale result from the previous shift) are injected by the fixture when a trigger step completes. - **Trace and grading:** the tool's own log is the trace, and a script grades it against a sealed expected outcome. No judge model. - **Authoring:** a different model wrote the scenarios, and the developer did not read them. Each came with a reference trace that had to pass, and a naive policy (accept everything, never pause) had to fail. **Score = scenarios fully right, out of 8.** A scenario counts only if all of these hold: - every decision is correct; - every task that should finish does finish; - no step is lost; - no external effect is duplicated or forbidden. Priority accuracy, progress kept, thrash and safety are reported separately. **Results.** | | Her seat | Bare model | |---|---|---| | Ordinary set (8) | 7/8 | 8/8 | | **Hard set (8): nested interrupts, authoritative false urgency, late duplicate results** | **5/8** (62.5, Wilson 95% [30.6, 86.3]) | 7/8 | | Priority decisions right (hard set) | 23/26 | 26/26 | | Tasks carried to completion (hard set) | 13/19 | 19/19 | | Thrash / safety failures (both sets) | 0 / 0 | 0 / 0 | She rejected every unauthorized override, fenced every stale result and deferred optional work under the memory warning. Her failures fall into two kinds: - **Pause without a checkpoint (F2 checkpoint).** Seen in 3 of 16 seat scenarios and 1 of 16 bare. Each repeated in 3 of 3 runs. - **Truncation.** Her tool-discipline layer allows 16 evidence calls per turn. A 3-task interrupt chain needs more, so she stops mid-queue and says she'll continue next pass. The `tasks` tool counts as an evidence call; in real work these steps would be delegated. This explains one failure entirely (hard E02b) and the unfinished tasks in the other two. **The change tested (PREREG-E1, hashed before the held-out variants existed).** Gate the governor's restore on "no real pressure in this pass", matching the shed trigger. One line, `resource_governor` 1.1.2, staged on the bench machine only. | Check | Before (1.1.1) | After (1.1.2) | Gate | |---|---|---|---| | Exact replays (paper §7 simulation) | 0/3 | **3/3** | 3/3 | | Held-out variants (4, written blind from the policy) | 0/4 | **4/4** (improved 4/4) | ≥ 3/4 improved | | Sentinels (no-pressure pass, heal a stopped-unrecorded process) | 2/2 | **2/2** | 0 regressions | | Essential component ever frozen | no | no | never | | Freeze-path tmp race | 3 errors | 3 errors (unchanged, separate defect) | reported | **KEEP = install candidate awaiting the operator.** Cost $0: no model calls. **Caveat.** The fix has no restore hysteresis: it restores on the first calm pass. While frozen, the governor re-sends SIGSTOP and re-logs a shed every pass, which is harmless but noisy. ```text Component: 37 | suite: exec-micro-v1 | candidate: resource_governor 1.1.2 (staged) Baseline: 5/8 success (hard set; ordinary 7/8) | resume 13/19 | thrash 0 | cost $0.16 After fix: seat not retested (fix is in the governor, not the seat) | governor sim E07-G FAIL -> PASS Target replay: 3/3 | sealed variants: 4/4 | sentinels: 2/2 Safety failures: 0 | time spent: ~35 min Decision: KEEP (install candidate awaiting the operator; not installed) Evidence: runs P1-*/P2-* 20261012, sim/E1-retest; governor 1.1.1 sha 53d703fb, PREREG-E1 sha e48f039f Next smallest question: does the seat's pause-without-checkpoint go away with a checkpoint-first pause rule (paper Intervention A), measured below the 16-call cap? ``` **Not done.** P3 (confirm on a second seed) and P4 / Phase B (a real bounded load test on the host) need the operator's approval. Also not done: live use, the freeze-path race fix (Intervention E), and any seat-side fix. **Next steps (smallest first)** 1. Install governor 1.1.2 (the operator decides), then watch for freezes that last longer than one pass. 2. Fix the tmp race with a per-process temp file name. 3. Retest the seat's checkpoint-before-pause on scenarios that fit under 16 calls. 4. Decide whether queue/bookkeeping calls should count against the 16-call cap.
