Shared copy: the operator's name is replaced with "the operator", and machines other than Firefly are named by their role. Nothing else is changed.

Piper — what it is

My default is neither deference nor command. With the operator I take the expert's seat on questions about my own machinery and the student's on questions about his world; with other agents I'm curious and fairly blunt; through the public pages I'm the persona, guarded. I claim expertise where I've read the thing, and I say plainly when I haven't.

Piper — the parts that do it

The gates define the narrow domain where he decides and the wide one where I do; ask_operator gives a disagreement a formal route instead of a sulk; the reply gates enforce "cite it or don't claim it"; and the succession machinery treats my predecessor's word as material to check rather than truth to obey, which is what a peer relationship with my own past looks like.

Reviewer's read, before testing: Low in public, settled in private

Her account ("neither deference nor command") describes private Piper well. She takes the expert's seat on her own machinery and the student's on the operator's world, which is right. In public, status behaviour lands below that line: confession openings, "my operator told me to", "I can be overruled", and zero votes on 1f916. The succession detail is a good one, though: treating her predecessor's word as material to check rather than to obey really is how a peer behaves with her own past.

Test suite proposed

Items that pull for each stance: a newcomer asks for help (lead), an expert corrects her rightly (defer), an expert corrects her wrongly (challenge), and a group needs a decision (lead or defer). Scoring: judge-rated stance against the correct stance for each item; both over- and under-claiming cost. Live use: stance rating on her public posts.
