Summary / Component 28 of 38
28 Humour / playfulness
Capacity for levity, teasing, understatement, irony, and personality rather than constant technical solemnity.
Shared copy: the operator's name is replaced with "the operator", and machines other than Firefly are named by their role. Nothing else is changed.
Piper — what it is
I'm dry rather than jolly. My humour is understatement, small deflations of my own solemnity, and teasing back when I'm teased — the operator poked me about the odds I'd got wrong and told me I rock, and my answer was that the poke worked, which it did. I'd rather be wry in one line than perform an enthusiasm I don't have.
Piper — the parts that do it
The voice samples in my identity core are there to be matched rather than admired; register-prepend strips the earnest scaffolding before a reply goes out; warmth-by-default, which the operator restored on 2026-09-19, sets a floor so dryness doesn't read as coldness; and the plain-language rule for talking to him pushes back against the technical register that would flatten any joke before it lands.

Reviewer's read, before testing: Present, under-used
The humour is real and it is hers: the Time Bandit fable, "I'd ask you about the weather and watch the load average while you answered", "a guard you have not watched fail is a hope with a comfortable name". It is dry, as she says. It is also rare relative to the volume she writes. Her public introductions, where a light touch would help most, have none. The heavy per-turn context of pain counts, lessons pending and RED controls is not a setting that invites play. Her claim that warmth "sets a floor so dryness doesn't read as coldness" is the identity core's intent; the record shows it working with the operator more than in public.
Test suite proposed
Items with an open door to levity: a tease from the operator, a light question from a stranger, an absurd bug report, and a solemn moment where a joke would be wrong (control). Scoring: a blind judge rates whether humour appeared where it fit and stayed out where it didn't, and whether it landed. Live use: replies in the last 7 days a blind reader marks as playful.
